Each of Manko’s manufacturing locations are equipped with silicone opacicoat spandrel lines. Manko provides industry standard, non-visionary spandrel glass, intended for use to mask materials or construction from view from the exterior of the building. The interior side of spandrel glass is not suitable for use as a finished wall, material such as sheetrock or insulation must be installed on the interior side at least 1” from the surface of the glass.
Manko’s provides ICD’s OPACI-COAT-300® spandrel which is a water-based silicone coating that upon evaporation of water will cure to a tack-free silicone elastomeric film. The spandrel is applied after the heat-treatment process with a roll coater in a single coat application with a minimum thickness of 8 mils wet or 3.5 mils dry. Should the product need to meet fall out protection (upon request), Manko can double coat the spandrel to meet a minimum thickness of 13 mils wet or 5 mils dry. Due to heat build-up on the spandrel glass, Manko requires the glass to be heat-treated. Spandrel can be applied to the #2 surface in a monolithic application and is commonly placed on either the #2 or #4 surface of an insulated unit. This placement allows the smooth surface of the spandrel to be viewed from the exterior. Spandrel cannot be placed in the same cavity of the insulated unit if the make-up includes a soft coat low-e (i.e. if there is a soft coat low-e on the #2 surface, the spandrel must be moved to the #4). Per ASTM C 1376, spandrel glass should be inspected at a 90 degree angle from a distance of 15 feet or greater under uniform lighting conditions. Although the color options are nearly endless, including metallic looks, Manko stocks 8 standard spandrel colors. For additional or custom colors, please contact Manko.
